How I Fixed my “Unfixable” Shoulder Injury, And Narrowly Avoided A £9000 Rotator Cuff Surgery
I’m Ollie:

(I know… bad timing)
Turns out… Body transformations are great for getting in shape.
Not so friendly on your joints though.
I smashed my body to pieces in a 12 week sprint to get in shape. My rotator cuff was severely deconditioned. It struggled to keep up with the heavy training and rapid rates of progress.

The pain restricted my workouts… at first.
I stubbornly tried to train through the pain… until dips, flyes, bench, and shoulder press became too painful.
Pressing was out.
But I still tried to make do with a limited library of upper body exercises… until rows, pulldowns and even arm exercises (like biceps curls)… became unbearable, too.
Training felt like a waste of time.
Every attempted upper body workout left me feeling weak… angry… frustrated… and it became impossible to maintain muscle or strength, let alone make any meaningful gym progress.
I became the dude with great legs… and a tiny upper body.
You’d think that was my rock bottom.
It wasn’t.
It started dictating my daily life too.
Scrubbing pans after breakfast. Carrying my backpack. Even the 9 minute grocery commute home from the corner shop became an event filled with frustration.
And I’ll be honest with you… It was NOT a quick fix.
My shoulder, mental health AND wallet suffered for years. Tried multiple physios. A couple osteos. Got cracked and adjusted by a chiropractor. Explored foam rolling, massages and graston.

Is “Easy” rehab. This involves low level exercises (like stretches, therabands, body weight drills and 3kg dumbbells).
This helps reduce your pain for a few days to weeks, but there’s a problem with it…

2) Matt Was Stuck In A Cycle
Before my program, he tried to fix his shoulder with classic physio exercises like the ones below.
They didn’t work.
Reduced his pain for a few days… but his pain returned when he tried to get back in the gym.

3) The Jump Is Too Big
You cant just go from these low intensity exercises to complex stuff like chest presses.
Why?
You’re going from “A to Z”… from easy to very hard, which would be the equivalent of going from 75kg squats to 200kg overnight.
So instead of trying to walk up the stairs 6 steps at a time (which would make you fall over), you need a middle step like this…
4) My Solution: “Bridging”
I found that by adding a middle step, clients build strength and resilience… without aggravating your shoulder or pain symptoms.
This middle step is called “Bridging”.
Because it “bridges” the gap between low level “easy” rehab, and high intensity training…
5) How Bridging Works
During the bridging phase, you see modified compound movements… more complex lifts… more varied equipment… and higher volumes / intensities (see examples below):
The goal is simple:
To prepare your shoulder so 1) it fully heals, 2) so you can move pain-free, and 3) so you can train unrestricted with intense exercise (eg. Bench press, Shoulder press, and Lat raises)

Some clients have worked with me for 6 weeks, and others for 6 months. But as a general rule… the longer you’ve been injured, the longer it’ll take to get out of pain. “If you walk 5 miles into a forest, you must walk 5 miles to get back out” – make sense?
My clients typically spend 3-4 hours in the gym per week.
But remember when I said:
“Everything is built around you” ?
That means we will adapt the program to your lifestyle and schedule. For example, I’ve had a client who wanted to train 6 times per week, and I have a long-term client right now who is just doing 1 weight training workout per week whilst training for a marathon.
ps. This client has worked with me for over a year (he joined my injury program, and then graduated to my more exclusive performance program)… and I recommend 2 workouts per week MINIMUM during the injury rehab phase.
Sure, that’s your decision.

I want to make this clear: I’m not a physical therapist.
And I’ll never be one.
It’s not because I don’t like physios. Like all professions, there are a lot of great (and not so great) physios out there.
What I do is just very different.
First off, my expertise is in anatomy, joint & muscle function, exercise mechanics, exercise design, and more.
And aside from the exercise side of things (which is what personal trainers and strength coaches base their careers on), I don’t use any of the same approaches that physical therapists use.
For normal people with acute injury:
Physical therapy is often enough, and they don’t need more help beyond that point. They’ve used passive treatments (like stretches) to mask pain symptoms, and they’ve managed to regain normal function of their shoulder with rehab exercise.
The problem arises….
When someone has had chronic shoulder issues, AND wants to go further than “normal day to day function”.
Because in my experience:
Physical therapy often fails to 1/ resolve long-term issues, and 2/ prepare your body for high-performance activity like training and pushing hard in the gym.
So I’m the perfect person:
For those who want to leap out of the injury rehab process, train pain-free, optimise shoulder function and performance, push hard in the gym without hating their joints.
And reduce future injury risk.
I’ve not had ANY shoulder issues since I started with Ollie (6 months now). I am confident that the strength work we have done has resolved my shoulder issues, and my body is in a much better place than when I started.
